Chapter Ten

“G ood job,” Curt said. “You just learned the C chord!” He had his arm around Sam, helping him hold his fingers in the right position, but Sam was doing all the strumming himself.

With a gigantic grin, Sam looked at him. “I love the guitar.” He strummed again, producing a pretty in-tune C. “Can I learn another chord?”

Curt looked at his watch. “It’s getting late, and your mom will be here soon.”

Just then, Jenna walked into the kitchen, a laundry basket in hand. She looked at them, and then, with a discreet yet unmistakable shifting of her eyes, seemingly averted her gaze, focusing intently on shifting the laundry basket to her other hip. Odd.

“Miss Jenna!” Sam wiggled in his chair, oblivious to her strange body language. “Look what Mr. Graham taught me.”

She set the laundry basket down on the counter, looking as if she took a deep breath as she did so. But the basket missed and fell with a clatter on the tile floor, spilling clothes all over.

“Oh, no.” She bent and quickly began gathering up the garments. “I seem to be all thumbs tonight.”

Curt unwrapped his arm from around Sam and made to get up and help.

She held up a hand. “No, stay there. I’ve got this. And I’m pretty sure Miss Landry will be mortified if you handle her unmentionables.”

He frowned. “You sure?”

“Positive.”

“What are unmentionables?” Sam asked.

Curt bent down and whispered the answer in his ear.

“Oh.” Sam thought for a moment. “Why not just say ‘underwear’?”

Jenna chuckled. “Good question, Sam.”

In no time she had the wayward laundry back in the basket. “No harm done.” She turned, her mouth pressed into a very bright smile. “So, Mr. Sam. Are you an expert guitar player now?”

“Yup,” Sam replied. “Come see.”

As Jenna moved closer to them, Curt took a hold of Sam’s hand and guided his fingers into the correct position over the strings. “You got it?”

Sam nodded. “Got it.”

“Strum away,” Curt told him, trying to ignore Jenna standing right in front of them, bent down slightly, her face alight with interest.

Sam strummed in a semblance of the up, up, down rhythm Curt had taught him.

“Look at you!” Jenna exclaimed, crouching down, resting her arms on her bent knees. “You’ll be playing in your own band before long.”

“I know,” Sam answered, squirming under Curt’s arm. Then he abruptly stopped strumming. “Hey, Miss Jenna. I have an idea.”

“What’s that?” she asked, her gorgeous green eyes focused on Sam.

“Why don’t you have Mr. Graham teach you to play guitar, too,” Sam said. “Then we could all play together.”

Jenna’s eyes widened, and then she shot to her feet and literally skittered backward. “Well, um...I don’t know...”

Suddenly, teaching Jenna to play sounded like a great idea to Curt. He had a feeling it had something to do with being close to her, but he wouldn’t explore that too deeply right now. It just felt right to teach her what he knew. About guitar.

“You need a lesson,” Sam said, untangling himself from Curt’s arm, then the guitar strap, before shoving the instrument back at Curt.
